Backstory
The staff’s gaudy and weighty headpiece was carved from a piece of meteorite, bought and commissioned by a wealthy patron to adorn the stage of his new amphitheater. On opening night, a lone, inappropriately dressed bard of unknown origins invaded the stage and stole the show with a rapturous, never-before-seen performance. However, before the patron and the audience could shower them with praise, they broke the staff from its base and absconded away with it, never to be seen again. It is said that that performance, combined with the staff’s special composition, imbued the staff with great magical power, and a bard who wields it can command the attention of any crowd. But like the bard that started it all, the staff never seems to appear anywhere for long, and there are many who would seek to abuse its power.
Mercury Staff (Legendary)
Staff, legendary (requires attunement)
This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While you hold it, you gain a +2 bonus to your spell save DC with spells that have a verbal component and advantage on Charisma (Performance) checks.
The staff has 30 charges for the following properties. It regains 3d8+6 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff loses its properties and becomes a nonmagical quarterstaff.
Spells. While holding the staff, you can use an action to expend some of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC or 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Charisma Modifier: command (6th-level version, 6 charges), enthrall (2 charges), hypnotic pattern (3 charges), otto’s irresistible dance (6 charges), speak with dead (3 charges), thunderwave (4th-level version, 4 charges), tongues (3 charges)
You can also use an action to cast the following spell from the staff without using any charges: message, booming blade (using the staff as the material component), vicious mockery. If you’re a bard, you can add your Charisma modifier to the damage of vicious mockery.
Mic. While holding the staff, you can use an object interaction to expend 1 of the staff’s charges. For the next minute, any creature that speaks directly into the staff’s headpiece has their voice amplified. Their voice can be heard clearly and loudly up to 600 ft. away.
Bard Soul. If you are Bard, then you can also expend charges for the following properties.
Break Free. While holding the staff, you can use an action to spend 2 charges to end the grappled, paralyzed, petrified, or restrained condition on a creature within 60 feet of you. The creature must be able to hear you except in the case of the petrified condition.
Rhapsody. You can use an action to begin a performance with the staff in hand and expend 10 of the staff’s charges to enrapture all creatures within 120 ft. that can hear you. Each creature must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC or else become charmed by you. While charmed in this way, they cannot help but spend each of their turns dancing and reveling at your performance. This performance lasts for as long as you spend your action on each of your turns continuing your performance, up to 17 minutes.
